Chapter 10

Talia

When I opened my eyes, I was staring up at a ceiling I’d never seen before. It had white plaster, but low hanging rafters that reminded me of a log cabin.

But not mine.

I sat up and gasped, furtively looking around. This wasn’t my pack’s cabin. All the memories of being kidnapped came rushing back in. And then the rush of magic as I stepped through the door. It must have been warded, and knocked me out.

How long had I been unconscious? Had anyone…

Fear flooded me and I quickly checked my body for injuries, running my hands over my neck, my breasts, and legs. Nothing seemed sore, or ill-used. My clothing was all still in place.

Relief flooded me. I hadn’t been touched. I’d know if I’d been hurt, or abused in some way.

A memory hit me, of a large black wolf shifter stopping me from driving out of town.

Shit! What time was it? My seventy-two hours might be almost up, or worse. I may have already run out of time altogether.

I jumped off the comfortable bed and raced to the window. I threw back the gray curtains and was blasted with sunshine. Judging by the position of the sun, it was at least the next day.

I raised my hand to shield my eyes. “Crap!” I said out loud. “I’ll never make it over the state line now.”

I had to try, though. What else could I do?

I raced to the bedroom door and pulled it open. The front door wasn’t far. I stumbled over my feet trying to get there, another memory rising and confronting me. The shifter… the man… had carried me here. He’d promised he wouldn’t hurt me.

Despite his size, and intimidating aura, he’d been… kind. For a kidnapper.

He’d obviously been true to his word, and not hurt me. So far.

But if I didn’t get out of here soon, the kidnapper and his pack would be the least of worries. My own pack were going to hunt me down and kill me the way they’d killed my father.

I pulled open the front door, but the moment I tried to step over the threshold, an invisible force threw me back. I landed heavily on my ass.

Damn it. The ward was still in place. And it worked both ways, in and out of this cabin.

I rolled to the side to rub the offended spot on my rear.

A huge man with blond scruffy hair blocked the doorway. “You’re finally awake.”

He growled at me as though I’d done something wrong, laying about sleeping in and being lazy, even though I was the one being held prisoner and I’d had no choice about whether or not I was awake.

I jumped to my feet, my wolf shifter rising within me. “Why can’t I get out of this cabin?”

The guy, who seemed younger than I first thought now that I was looking at him properly, quirked a smile at me. “It’s warded. You can’t get through.”

“Well, obviously its warded. But I have to leave! You don’t understand.
